• The schwa sound is very similar to the /u/ sound in up, but is different in two ways:

• Because it occurs in unstressed syllables, the /u/ in a schwa is quieter and shorter. Your mouth has a neutral position with minimal jaw and tongue movement when saying the schwa sound.

• The short /u/ sound is often stressed, like in up, using slightly more jaw drop and muscle tension.
